"One thing is clear: the human mind can imagine both how to break self-esteem and how to nurture it—and imagining anything is the first step toward creating it. Believing in a true self is what allows a true self to be born."
- Gloria Steinem, Revolution from Within

workshops & public speaking

While there's definitely a need for private work & reflection, there's definitely a place for group work especially when exploring confidence & creativity. For example:
  • Instructor for my Stage Presence Classes that I developed to increase confidence both on & off stage in students ages 4-18 by performing musical theater numbers—acting, singing, & choreography at more difficult levels than are typically given to people their ages in order to keep them engaged & challenged.
  • Facilitator for my Confidence Clinic, a workshop that I developed to increase confidence in adults both on & off stage, using a variety of reflection & interactive exercises.
  • Keynote Speaker for the Fresh Minds Symposium put on by the University of Victoria for an audience of 200 15-16-year-olds with a presentation entitled "Sometimes the best thing for your mind is getting out of your head."
  • Featured Presenter for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada’s Parenting Program Facilitators 2-day Retreat, where I developed & presented a dynamic 3-hour workshop on “How to Make a Workshop Work.”
"In working with Colleen during the development and implementation of the workshop, I clearly recognized her ability to adapt materials for a particular audience, to listen and be responsive to the needs of the participants, as well as provide a highly polished, professional workshop while still maintaining a level of approachability and openness."
 - Deena Ropp-Reis, Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada

learning philosophy

Picture
In my seminars & courses, I love to challenge the status quo in unexpected ways. You’ll often hear laughter arising from the seemingly silliest of exercises followed by lively discussions as participants connect the dots to even the most sobering topics. Activities range from individual to small groups, from inside to outside of the classroom, & from written to video to puppetry assignments, encompassing an array of learning & presentation experiences. Empowering participants to find their individual voices is key.
To me quality education not only informs, but reveals much about ourselves & our world through questioning & engagement. I like to examine issues from many perspectives which requires a willingness to venture into the unknown & unfamiliar in an effort to evolve... transform the heart, mind, & soul. I try to create a safe yet compelling & diverse learning environment so that participants accept the invitation to explore beyond their familiar comfort zones & engage the whole of who we are when searching for answers.
"I was able to observe the workshop and was truly amazed at how well Colleen facilitated the activities for such a large group: her energy and enthusiasm permeated the room and she instilled a sense confidence in the 200 student-participants, as she clearly defined and communicated the directions regarding the team-based movement activities or the static-but-living scenes they were to depict. The students in turn, created wonderfully thoughtful and creative scenes and were totally engrossed and engaged… Another teacher wrote, 'I thought the keynote presenter was amazing. The kids are still zipping and zapping. She didn’t need a mic... You could have heard a pin drop at some points when she was speaking.'”

“Because theatre is essentially concerned with the sweep of human experience, it tends to prompt new levels of questioning rather than to promote answers”
